Rules for the Competition
4th Carl Nielsen International Flute Competition May 30 - June 9, 2010
§1.
The competition is open to flautists of all nationalities under the age of 30, i.e. born no earlier than May 30, 1980.
§2.
The application must be received by February 1, 2010
Applicants must register directly on this website. Online registration is possible after November 1.
Registration is definitive only when the online form is duly filled in and submitted and the Secretariat has received the following:
1. Application fee of DKK 750 (approx. €100).
2. Recent portrait (close-up headshot) of the candidate - min. 9 x 12 cm - colour or black/white, as print or high resolution TIFF, EPS or JPEG (picture definition min. 300 dpi). Print or file must be clearly marked with the candidate’s name
3. Copy of birth certificate, identity card or passport
4. Copy of music examination certificate(s) and diplomas (if applicable)
5. Unedited CD recording performed by the candidate of:
- W.A. Mozart: Flute Concerto in G major K313, 1st movement with Cadenza (with piano or orchestral accompaniment)
- Joachim Andersen: Etude in F major from “24 instruktive Übungen” Op. 30 for flute solo
- Carl Nielsen: Flute Concerto, 1st movement Cadenza bars 146-160 (bars 146-147 must be played without accompaniment)
6. A declaration signed by the candidate certifying that he/she has read and accepted these rules.

The application will not be returned.
The application fee is non-refundable.
§3.
Applicants will be informed by March 1, 2010 as to whether they have been accepted as competitors in the competition.
Max. 48 competitors will be selected by three Jury members in a "blind test". The Pre-jury listens to recordings without knowing names of candidates.
The pre-jury’s decision is final and cannot be appealed.
§4.
Competitors must report to the Secretariat of The Carl Nielsen International Music Competitions in Odense Concert Hall before 2pm on May 30, 2010.
In extraordinary circumstances (forcemajeure), the Organizing Committee may permit late arrivals to participate in the competition, if they report personally, no later than one day after the first round of the competition has begun.
§5.
The competition has four rounds, three preliminary and one final.
All four rounds are open to the public.
The competition programme must NOT be performed from memory.
Competitors may perform the works of rounds 1 and 3 in any order they choose.
§6.
The order of performance will be determined by lot at 3.30pm on May 30, 2010 in Odense Concert Hall.
The order will remain unchanged throughout the entire competition.
The presence of all competitors is requested while the lots are being drawn.
A maximum of 24 competitors will be admitted to the second round.
A maximum of 12 competitors will be admitted to the third round.
Four competitors will be selected for the final round.
COMPETITION PROGRAMME
§7.
All rehearsals, competition rounds and concerts during the competition may, with the permission of the Organizing Committee, be:
A) recorded for and broadcast/published by radio, TV, CD, DVD and Internet
B) photographed
In these cases, competitors and accompanists disclaim all rights and fees.
§8.
The jury will consist of prominent musicians from around the world.
§9.
The jury reserves the right:
A) not to award one or more prizes
B) to divide a prize between two competitors.
The jury’s decision is final and cannot be appealed.
§10.
The Competition will provide accompanists for the competitors free of charge. The organizers will assign competitors to accompanists by lot from the list of official accompanists.
Competitors are permitted to bring their own accompanists. In that case they must inform the Secretariat no later than April 1, 2010 of name and nationality of their accompanists. The organizers will not be responsible for any expenses incurred.
An official accompanist cannot be hired as a “personal accompanist”.
§11.
Travelling expenses must be paid by the competitors and their accompanists.
Competitors will receive DKK 250 per day towards their expenses while in Odense (excepted are competitors who are residents in Funen).
Competitors will receive this payment only for the duration of the rounds in which they actively participate.
Private lodging, free of charge, will be offered to competitors during the entire competition. This offer includes "bed & breakfast" and is strictly reserved to competitors, only, who have expressed their wish stay with a local family no later than April 1 2010.
Information about hotel accommodation in Odense can be seen on the website VISIT FYN. Hotel expenses must be borne by the competitors.
§12.
These rules were originally written in Danish.
Any point of dispute will be settled with in accordance with the Danish version of the rules.
